This term is misunderstood to mean ‘simpler’, leading creationists to protest that supposedly primitive organisms are actually very complex. It is used by evolutionists to mean that a feature is ‘closer to an ancestral state’.
This error is based on a misunderstanding of how evolution happens (see Great Chain of Being) and not taking into account that everything alive today has had the same amount of time to evolve. (‘So why are there many organisms that haven't changed?’)
