For information about index fossils, relative dating of strata, and related claims of circular reasoning, see the geologic column page.
For resources dealing generally with problems of the claim of a catastrophic global Flood, see the Flood geology page.
For information about the patterns of fossil distribution throughout and within the strata, and also geographically, along with the implications for evolution or the biblical Flood, see the sorting/distribution of fossils page.
For information about the succession of changes through the strata and what they tell us about evolution, as well as resources dealing with claims about gaps in the fossil record, see below and the transitional fossils page.
Claim CC201: We should see smooth change through the fossil record, not gaps

18 Were natural mechanisms at work within the creative process?
Part 18 of Stephen Godfrey's story about coming to the realization that the YEC position he had been taught was wrong. The preceding four parts tell of how he realized that there is a non-random distribution of fossils in the rocks and that the order that is found cannot have been due to a global flood. In this part, he talks about his subsequent thoughts about whether what is to be found in the fossil record fitted with his view of God and what he believed the Bible claims or whether the evidence points to evolution. In the next part, he talks about his thoughts about the possibility of variation within created 'kinds'.
In this video, Jackson Wheat looks at how our understanding of the fossil record has evolved.
Debunking Creationists - Dr. Jerry Bergman
Video looking at claims Bergman has made about many living species being ‘unchanged’ from their fossilized counterparts. (For more on this topic, see 'Living fossils'.)
In this video, Jackson Wheat explains how the study of fossils can tell us so much about what the Earth was like in the past.
In this video, Jackson Wheat explains what the study of pollen grains, spores, and other microscopic fossils can tell us about the past.

The Ark Encounter Sits on a Foundation Made of Trillions of Fossils
Posts by biologist Joel Duff on his Naturalis Historia blog, looking at how the numbers of fossils are too many to have been living at the time of the Flood or in the time between the Creation and the Flood.
